One of the great things about living in the woods and country is we are surrounded by trees and nature which I love... 
One of the not-so-good things about living in the woods and country (and a humid place) are the bugs, insects, and critters!! Just to give you an idea here is a sampling of what we have encountered in our home and/or in the yard in our short few weeks of being here...
One of the not-so-good things about living in the woods and country (and a humid place) are the bugs, insects, and critters!! Just to give you an idea here is a sampling of what we have encountered in our home and/or in the yard in our short few weeks of being here...
A fox, lightening bugs, flies, bubble bees, wasps, cockroaches, beetles- big ones, ants, fire ants, carpenter ants, mosquitoes, bats (thankfully, flying high above the house), moths, things that look like big scary moths... but no idea what they are, mice, ticks (thankfully no encounters yet), caterpillars, spiders of all kinds, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, spiders with RED legs, box elder bugs, potato bugs, all kinds of other unidentified creepy crawlies and fliers, jelly fish (at the beach), shark teeth (at the beach), and last but not least... deer prancing and eating in our yard!
We bug bombed the house before we left for Washington, caught a mouse before we left and thankfully haven't seen any in the house since our return! We did have an encounter with a mouse complete with shrieks and squeals from both of us while organizing the basement storage, On the list of things to do... spray perimeter of house, never play in the grass (we'll stick to the deck!), and set more mouse traps!

It's so funny to hear you talk about all the critters! That's how I was in Vegas...after having a cockroach (2 inches long) crawl up my leg in the shower one time, I insisted on having pest control come spray every month! :) Grateful we never got mice, that would totally freak me out!!
I hope the fox was in the yard and not the house :o)
Don't give up the grass - just invest in some good "Off" (how old do the kids have to be before you can use DEET on them?). Too bad they don't have stuff for kids like dogs - where you put it on them once a month and they're set!
And as much as I hate them, bats eat mosquitos so if they do their job, maybe there won't be many mosquitos soon! We have tons and tons of gnats here!
Beware of the ticks just ask Bobby!!
Gotta love the east coast! One bug that really freaks me out that they have back there are "May flies" they only live for 24 hours and in the summer time they cover the streets and side walks. Good luck with all your pest problems... Oh and I would pay good money to hear Tyson shriek and squeal!
